Students of Matej Bel University experienced migration decision-making through the Destination Europe activity

06 May 2026

On 28 April 2026, students of Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica took part in the Destination Europe workshop, which was organised within the activities of EMN Slovakia. The interactive workshop was attended by 46 students, who explored how decisions in the field of migration policies are made and what factors influence them.

Within the Destination Europe activity, students stepped into the roles of different actors involved in shaping migration policies – ministers, the European Commissioner, mayors, representatives of the public and other groups with different priorities and concerns. Their task was to discuss, negotiate and look for common solutions to the individual challenges that arose during the activity.

An important part of the workshop was also the reflection after the role-play activity. Several students said they perceived the activity as a responsible experience, as the decisions they made during the activity directly affected the lives of migrants.

The Destination Europe workshop gave participants a closer understanding of how decision-making on migration policies takes place in situations where different actors with different interests come together. It showed them that such decisions require taking into account not only the positions of individual actors, but also their possible consequences for the people directly affected by migration.

About Destination Europe

Destination Europe is an educational and training tool based on role-playing for groups of 4 to 6 participants. Over the course of 90 minutes, participants experience a comprehensive decision-making process on migration policies involving various stakeholders with sometimes conflicting interests.

The tool was developed by the European Migration Network (EMN) and is aimed at youth and adults aged 16 and older.

If you would like more information about this educational tool or are interested in organizing a similar workshop and/or lecture on migration topics, please contact EMN Slovakia at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
