Migration is a complex topic governed by various policies, laws, and institutions. The updated document Organisation of Migration and Asylum Policies in the Slovak Republic provides an overview of the institutions and organizations responsible for different areas of migration from non-EU countries. It also maps key policies, legislative frameworks, and strategic documents governing migration in Slovakia, reflecting new measures and changes in response to current challenges.
Migration and international protection policies in Slovakia are primarily overseen by three ministries:
✔ Ministry of Interior of the SR – Develops and implements policies related to border management, both legal and irregular migration (including combating human trafficking), international protection, citizenship, returns, and anti-trafficking efforts. These activities are carried out primarily through the Bureau of the Border and Foreign Police of the Police Force Presidium, the Migration Office, and the Crisis Management Section.
✔ Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, and Family of the SR – Coordinates labor migration, integration policies, social services, financial and non-financial aid also to Ukrainian refugees employment support for migrants, as well as care for unaccompanied minors.
✔ Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic – Coordinates the external dimension of migration, consular services for foreigners (such as visa issuance and residence,citizenship applications), relationships with non-EU countries, development cooperation, humanitarian assistance, and collaboration with international organizations.
Ministries and other state authorities coordinate through several interministerial platforms, with the Interministerial Working Group for the Coordination of Employment of Third-Country Nationals established in 2024.
