On October 20th, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), as the European Migration Network (EMN) coordinator in Slovakia, hosted the Destination Europe workshop as part of the jubilee 25th edition of the One World International Documentary Film Festival. Known for its focus on global issues, the One World Festival brings attention to topics such as migration, climate change, and human rights through impactful films and discussions, creating a space for thoughtful engagement on these important topics. As partner of this inspiring festival, IOM Slovakia joined in celebrating human rights and exploring important topics through organization´s activities.
Thanks to the Destination Europe activity, attendees were invited to step into the roles of key stakeholders in migration policy, such as ministers, European Commissioners, local government representatives, and representatives from non-governmental organizations. The role-playing exercise simulated a negotiation environment where participants discussed migration and integration topics, exploring the complex decision-making process and observing the potential impact of their choices on various migrants in diverse situations.
Through this immersive experience, they gained insights into the varied perspectives of those involved in migration governance, balancing the interests of multiple actors and considering the diverse realities of migrants. The activity emphasized the importance of informed dialogue and reflection on global issues and foster a deeper awareness of migration's role in today’s interconnected world.
During the festival, participants also had an opportunity to immerse themselves into virtual reality and watch stories of people impacted by climate change and conflicts.
EMN Slovakia organizes Destination Europe workshops which usually takes 1.5 hour. This workshop can be accompanied by a lecture on migration. The workshops are free of charge.
