On 23 June 2021, the Migration Office of the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) as members of the National Contact Point of the European Migration Network (EMN) in Slovakia in cooperation with the Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia organized an online discussion REFUGEES AMONG US – How does it work in Slovakia?. The event aimed at presenting the topic of refugees and granting of international protection in the Slovak Republic based on factual information and up-to-date statistical data.
In the first panel, representatives of the IOM, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia discussed the global challenges of migration from the perspective of international organizations. Consequently, the experts from the Migration Office of the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic explained how the asylum process in the Slovak Republic looks like from the submission of application to granting protection. At the end, the representatives of the Migration Office presented the activities of the Office in the area of international cooperation and working abroad, especially under the European Asylum and Support Office (EASO).
It was stated that more than half of the refugees are women and 86 % of all refugees stay in developing countries. Most of the refugees try to find refuge in neighbouring countries or they are internally displaced in their country of origin.
From the discussion you will also learn:
- from which five countries most refugees originate,
